Spring Wind Seasonal Allergies and Sinus Issues

by Amy Yehousua

We talk a lot about the organ systems in Chinese Medicine, but there are also elements that have a profound effect on the body. Wind, cold, heat, summer heat, damp, and dryness are the causes of many common symptoms.

Wind acts the same in the body as it does in nature. It comes in quickly and shakes everything up, moving from place to place. Wind symptoms are usually associated with late Winter and Spring. It normally affects the upper body and face. Wind can move through the lungs, sweat glands, sinuses, and skin. Thus, causing headaches, coughs, runny noses and eyes, post nasal drip, and itchy skin. Wheezing, facial edema, painful sinuses, and scratchy throats can also occur.

We know in Western medicine, allergies happen when your immune system misidentifies something as harmful and builds a defense against it with mucus and inflammation. We are then prescribed medicine to mask the symptoms. In Chinese Medicine we look for the root of the problem. Where is the underlying deficiency that allows this to happen? Is it the energy of the lung? Does it lack defense forces? Is it the Spleen that over produces phlegm and dampness. Wind is Chinese medicine’s way of describing our vulnerability to outside factors such as an allergen. Dampness describes mucus buildup in the sinuses, the lungs, and the digestive tract.

Regular Acupuncture treatments help diminish symptoms and strengthen the body so they don’t come back. Herbs, supplements, and dietary changes also play a key role.
